What it does to a room
A plain hall with white walls and overhead fluorescents photographs like a plain hall. The same room with warm amber up the walls and the overheads down photographs like a venue. Nothing else in this list changes as much for as little.
Placed where they should be
Corners and the far wall are what change a room, and placement is most of the job. Rob has lit barns, town halls and tents, with and without house power, in his own words; ask him what your room needs.
One color, chosen properly
Pick the color against your linens and your flowers, not off a swatch. Deep blues read cold on skin in photographs; warm ambers and soft pinks flatter almost everyone. Rob will tell you if the color you picked is going to do something you did not intend.
Set before guests arrive
Placed and tested while the room is still empty, then struck at the end of the night. You never see it happen.
Before you book
What your venue needs to be able to do.
Ask these before the deposit, not on the week of. Every one of them has stopped somebody’s plan at some point.
- Permission to place fixtures against the walls. Almost every venue allows this; a few historic rooms have rules about what can touch a wall.
- Whether power is needed at each fixture depends on the setup; Rob will tell you after seeing the room or a photo of it.
- The room needs its own overhead lighting turned down for uplighting to do anything. Worth confirming your venue can dim.
The difference from a rental company
The national companies that outrank this page on price will ship you a case of fixtures and a return label. Somebody in your wedding party then has to place them, color-match them, and pack them up at midnight. Rob arrives with them, places them, runs them and takes them away. That is the entire difference, and it is the whole reason to pay for it.

What is uplighting, and does it actually change the room?
Uplighting is a set of fixtures placed around the walls that wash the room in one color you choose. It is the single biggest visual difference for the money, because it changes every photograph taken after dark. Rob delivers, places and runs them, which is the part the ship-it-yourself rental companies cannot do.
Are cold spark fountains safe indoors?
They are designed to be. A cold spark fountain uses a heated metal powder rather than pyrotechnics, so there is no flame and no smoke, and the sparks are cool enough to touch. Venues still set their own rules, so Rob checks with yours before the day rather than on it.
